Your taste buds don’t have to suffer through ho-hum snacks for the sake of a healthy heart. Not only are pretzels low in fat, some varieties, such as Unique Pretzel Bakery Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells are a delicious alternative to chips or candy and may actually be some of the healthiest snacks you can eat!

Unique Pretzel Bakery is a family-owned business founded about 120 years ago in Reading, PA.  We are the original bakers of the famous split-open pretzel, called Unique “Splits”, the only one of their kind. And Unique Shells are bite-size hollow pockets that have the delightful crunch of the outside pretzel shell but no filling.

Heart Healthy Snacks

We recently introduced the only 100% whole grain sprouted flour pretzels in the industry, called Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells. They are made with a revolutionary new sprouted wheat flour from Essential Eating® Sprouted Foods that is USDA Certified organic, kosher, vegan, and designed to help you add more wholesome whole grains to your diet.

Sprouted Pretzels Deliver Fiber and Nutrients

Whole grains are seeds that have not yet germinated (sprouted).  Their protective outer layer called the bran lays dormant until the time is right to sprout. When subjected to the right temperatures and moisture conditions, it cracks open and a new plant begins to form.  At this stage, they are called “sprouted grains.”

It’s easier for the body to digest sprouted grains because the sprouting process breaks down the starches in the grain into simple sugars. The body uses them for energy instead of storing them as fat. The body also recognizes and metabolizes sprouted grains as vegetables. They are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that the body can now digest with the help of vegetable enzymes instead of pancreatic enzymes.

According to the USDA, we should all consume more whole grains to enjoy the healthy benefits of their fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. Here are just a few of the benefits of snacking on our new Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells:

Low Fat
Pretzels are a great snack choice when it comes to fat content. Each 1-ounce serving of Sprouted “Splits” (about 3 pretzels) or of Sprouted Shells (about 10 pretzels), has just two grams of total fat and no cholesterol.  Most of the fat consists of olive oil, a healthy unsaturated fat that helps lower cholesterol. In comparison, a 1-ounce portion of salted potato chips and tortilla chips have over 10 grams of fat.

Fiber
Pretzels are high in fiber. Each 1-ounce serving of Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells contain 4 grams of fiber. According to nutrition experts, adult men should consume 38 grams of fiber per day and adult women should consume 25 grams.  So just one serving of our sprouted grain pretzels is equal to 10% of the recommended daily intake for men and 16% for women. Potato and tortilla chips have only about 1.2 grams per 1-ounce serving.

Calories
The calorie count in pretzels is lower than in potato or tortilla chips. You’ll get 100 calories from a 1-ounce serving of Unique Pretzels Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells.  The same serving of potato chips has 155 calories. Tortilla chips have about 146, depending on the flavorings used.

In addition to the low fat, high fiber and low calories, Unique Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells are lactose-free, sugar-free, trans fat-free, and contain only non-GMO ingredients.

If you are craving that well-known pretzel crunch, you can relax knowing that our sprouted whole grain varieties are, indeed, heart healthy snacks. Look for them at your local Wegmans, Fresh Market, Whole Foods and Giant stores, or visit our online store.
