Do you or a loved one suffer from discomfort caused by lactose intolerance? When you’re looking for delicious lactose free snacks, Unique Pretzels Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells are the perfect solution!

Unique Pretzel Bakery is a well-known family-owned business founded in Reading, PA, during the late 1890s. We have recently introduced the only 100% whole grain sprouted flour pretzels in the industry, called Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells.

Lactose Free Snacks

Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells are made with revolutionary new sprouted wheat flour from Essential Eating® Sprouted Foods. What makes it so revolutionary, you ask?

Not only does the sprouted wheat flour help you add more healthy whole grains to your diet, but the pretzels we make from it are USDA Certified organic, kosher, vegan, GMO-free, low fat, sugar-free, cholesterol-free, diabetic-friendly, and, yes, lactose free!

Unique Pretzels Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells are the only pretzels on the market made with organic, extra-virgin olive oil. They also offer more nutrition in every bite because sprouting the grains to make the flour increases antioxidants, vitamins B2, B5 and B6, vitamin C, and carotene, and reduces the effects of phytic acid, which inhibits the body’s absorption of nutrients during digestion.

What is Lactose Intolerance?

According to the National Institutes of Health, individuals with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest the main sugar (called lactose) found in milk and milk products. Our small intestines produce an enzyme or protein known as lactase, to break down the lactose for digestion. However, in some people, the small intestine doesn’t make enough lactase.

When the lactose does not break down, some people experience symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and gas after consuming dairy products. The symptoms vary from person to person, and some people with low levels of lactase don’t have any symptoms at all.

How to Avoid Lactose?

Cutting milk products out of your diet is an option, but most people with lactose intolerance can enjoy some milk products without symptoms. You may be able to minimize the symptoms by consuming smaller servings of milk at one time, experimenting with different types of dairy products, using over-the-counter lactase enzyme tablets, or buying lactose-free products.

If you do have symptoms, be sure to check product labels for other ingredients that may be derived from dairy products, such as butter, buttermilk, cream, cheese, casein (a milk-derived protein found in many processed foods), and whey (produced during cheese-making).

It’s important, however, to be sure you don’t deprive yourself of calcium and vitamin D when you eliminate lactose from your diet. Vitamin D can be found in eggs, liver, yogurt, and sunshine. Calcium can be found in foods like broccoli, canned salmon, oranges, pinto beans, rhubarb and spinach, to name a few.

Fortunately, each 1-ounce serving of Unique Pretzels Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells (about 3 pretzels) provides about 2% of your recommended daily calcium requirement.

In addition to being lactose-free, the sprouted grain wheat flour we use to make our Unique Pretzels actually digests like a vegetable! The whole grain sprouting process converts the grain into a living food, preserving its natural nutrients in a form that our bodies can more easily absorb.
