Are pretzels a healthy snack for diabetics?  Are there specific things you should look for in your pretzels to ensure that you’re getting the right nutrition throughout the day?

Pretzels for Diabetics

Unique Pretzel Bakery was founded in Reading, PA, during the late 1890s.  We are the original bakers of the famous split-open pretzel, called Unique “Splits”, the only one of their kind. Their counterparts, Unique Shells, are bite-size hollow pockets that have the popular crunch of the outside pretzel shell, but no filling. They’re the favorites of people who prefer just the crunchy pretzel exterior.

In addition to our tried-and-true traditional pretzel recipe, we recently introduced the only 100% whole grain sprouted flour pretzels in the industry, called Unique Pretzels Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells! They’re also the only pretzels made with extra-virgin olive oil.

Converted to a Living Food

These special pretzels are made with a revolutionary new sprouted wheat flour from Essential Eating® Sprouted Foods that is organic, diabetic-friendly, kosher, vegan, and designed to help you add more wholesome whole grains to your diet.

If you need more convincing, they’re also:

  • Cholesterol-free
  • Trans-fat free
  • Lactose-free
  • Sugar-free
  • Low in fat
  • High in fiber
  • Heart-healthy

The unique sprouted wheat flour has excellent baking characteristics and great flavor. But one of its very best features is that the body easily digests it more like a vegetable than as a starch.

The process of sprouting grains (or germinating them) returns the dormant seed to its original living plant state, and starches in the grain are broken down into “simple” sugars.

The USDA classifies simple sugars as vegetables, the easiest foods to digest. The body recognizes them and metabolizes them as vegetables with vegetable enzymes instead of pancreatic enzymes. This means the grains can now be used for energy instead of being stored as fat.

The sprouting process also releases enzymes in the grains that break down proteins and carbohydrates. This gives them a Low Glycemic Index, making them diabetic-friendly.

Healthier for Everyone

Another important dietary factor for diabetics and non-diabetics alike is fiber, which can improve blood sugar levels. In fact, including insoluble fiber from fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The USDA recommends that healthy adults consume 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories we eat. If you consume 2,000 calories a day, aim for 28 grams of fiber daily. Unique Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells are the only pretzels to naturally provide 4 grams of dietary fiber per serving.

Whether or not you or someone you love is diabetic, whole grains, particularly sprouted whole grains, are full of fiber and essential vitamins and minerals, such as antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamins B2, B5 and B6, and carotene. And Sprouted Pretzels and Sprouted Shells contain no saturated fats or trans fats.
