Where to Buy Sprouted Grain Pretzels
Before you try to figure out where to buy sprouted grain pretzels you may want to understand why you want them! They are a delicious, easy to digest form of nutritious whole grains. Sprouted whole grains offer you healthy and kosher snacks that your family will adore.
The concept behind sprouted grain pretzels is relatively new. However, at Unique Pretzel Bakery, one hundred and twenty years of pretzel making experience equate to incredible products. In fact, our sprouted grain pretzels come in two different forms: Sprouted “Splits” and Sprouted Shells.
What are Sprouted Grains?
Whole grains are seeds that have not undergone the germination process. They are enveloped in a tough outer layer called the bran. Proper conditions cause the bran to split and begin to grow a new plant. At this stage, they are called “sprouted” grains.
It requires a complex process to induce sprouting from organic whole grains. The starch molecules in the grain are naturally converted to simple sugars (which we easily digest as vegetables) and the nutrients are preserved. In fact, when sprouted properly, the USDA certifies the sprouted grain flour as a vegetable!
Most sprouted products are made using a wet-milling or “mash” process. The grains are soaked (sometimes drowned), and there is no guarantee that they have actually sprouted. They are not milled into flour, but are ground into a paste for baking. Products made with mash tend to be coarser in texture, bitter, and may contain parts of the broken up bran and foreign matter.
There are newer processes, like the one Essential Eating® Sprouted Foods uses, that involve rinsing, drying, sifting and milling the sprouted grain into 100% whole grain flour with great baking characteristics and no bitterness.
Obviously there are additional benefits to utilizing sprouted grains for healthy living. Some things to consider when choosing to introduce sprouted grains into your diet include the digestibility of these grains, their essential nutrients, and lack of bitter flavor.
The sprouting process increases the production of vitamins A, B, and C. Additionally, the phytic acid in the grain, which can inhibit the body’s absorption of zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium, is neutralized. And, because the sprouted grain flour is not bitter, there’s no need to add the sweeteners or additives that whole grains generally need to make them tasty.
